Inspired by visits to the Navajo Nation Reservation and the Inter-Tribal Ceremonial in Gallup, New Mexico in the early 1980s, I chose to honor the culture and spirit of Indigenous American peoples by setting a few memorable poems to music. Originally written in the Nahuatl language of the Aztecs, «We Only Came to Dream» and «Like a String of Jade Jewels» are accompanied here by the saucy dance «The Agaya Crab» from the Carib People of Dominica. The poems are taken from the book «The Magic World: American Indian Songs and Poems,» selected and edited by William Brandon (1991), reprinted with the permission of Ohio University Press, Athens, Ohio.
